From Philly To The San Francisco Bay
The Golden State Warriors have come a long way. The team was founded in 1946 in Pennsylvania by Peter A. Tyrrell. They thrived early in their history, winning titles in 1947 and 1956. However, it wasn’t until Wilt Chamberlain came along that they become a relevant team. Chamberlain dominated the NBA like no other team in his era, and even though that doesn’t always translate to success or NBA championships, he was so good that the league even had to enforce several rule changes to prevent him from getting an unfair advantage over his peers. He played there from 1959 to 1965, playing for them during their transition to the San Francisco Bay Area when they were renamed San Francisco Warriors.
With Chamberlain leaving town, the Dubs welcomed Rick Barry and Nate Thurmond as their new superstars to lead the new era under the name Golden State Warriors, winning their first title since leaving San Francisco in the 1975 Finals. A decade later, Chris Mullin, Tim Hardaway, and Mitch Richmond took the NBA by storm with the ‘Run TMC’ era. Unfortunately for them, that would be the last time they’d be competitive in a very, very long time.

The Warriors were bottom-feeders for most of their history. They were one of the worst sports teams in the nation but still, Bay area fans flooded the arena to root for them amid their never-ending struggles. Then, the ‘We Believe’ team in 2007 brought back hope for fans but they couldn’t finish the job in the playoffs.
Stephen Curry came along in 2009 and completely turned the franchise around. The Splash Brothers era with Mark Jackson and later Steve Kerr has been the most successful tenure in the Warriors’ history, and they’ve also been one of the best teams in the history of the NBA. They brought multiple titles back to the Bay area, but we’ll get to that in a while.
The Stephen Curry Era
Stephen Curry was often overlooked. He wasn’t a highly-touted recruit coming out of high school even despite being the son of Dell Curry. He attended Davidson and broke all kinds of records in college but that wasn’t enough to prove his doubters wrong. The Timberwolves snubbed Curry twice in the Draft, taking Ricky Rubio and Johnny Flynn ahead of him. Then, not even the Warriors were sure about whether he was going to be the one who could turn that ever-struggling franchise arrive.

The Warriors tried to trade Curry multiple times before he broke out as a superstar. Concerns about his ankles made them look for other stars like Andrew Bogut and Chris Paul, but the Bucks asked for Monta Ellis instead, and Paul stated that he had no intention of playing for the Warriors, thus killing the deal. That would end up being a blessing in disguise for the Warriors. Curry blossomed as the greatest shooter of all time and Kerr was able to create the best regular-season team in NBA history, even breaking the Bulls’ 72-10 record in one of the most memorable events in recent sports history. Tickets sales were off the roof in Oakland, and that’s still like that at the new Chase Center.
Golden State Warriors: An Unlikely Dynasty
Mark Jackson set the first stones for the Warriors dynasty. They drafted multiple stars in Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and even Harrison Barnes; putting together an elite championship core. Nonetheless, it was Steve Kerr the one who turned them from pretenders to real contenders, up to the point where they won 73 games in a single regular season.

Kerr’s focus on pace and space helped the Warriors change the game, for better or worse. They dominated LeBron James in the Finals two out of three times. Their success pretty much financed the development of the project and construction of the Chase Center and made them one of the greatest teams in sports history. Now, they’ll have to live up to that name and continue to bring joy to the fans in the Bay area.
