Stephen Silas was born in Boston, but he spent many of his early days in New York following his successful father’s journey. Basketball was part of his life from an early age, and in his mind, there was never a doubt about the basketball future. He graduated in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
Stephen Silas – Coaching career
Stephen Silas is the son of the legendary Paul Silas, who spent three decades on the NBA benches. Despite being unknown for the casual fan, Stephen Silas has been in the League for two decades, in assistant coach and scout roles. In his last position, he was one of Rick Carlisle‘s assistants in Dallas and one of the most valued assistant coaches in the NBA.
As his father’s assistant, Silas made his debut on the bench at the age of 27 at the beginning of the century. But then he also went through the Hornets, Cavs, and Warriors, as an assistant, and the Wizards, as a scout. Silas returned to Charlotte (2010), where he has spent most of his career, served as a prelude to his arrival with the Mavs, whom he joined in 2018.
He has been part of the coaching staff that has helped the Mavs close the 2019-20 season with the best offensive efficiency data in NBA history. In other words, the most productive attack ever.

During that season, he built a strong relationship with young Mavs rookie Luka Doncic. Silas’ job was to help Luka in his NBA beginnings. When he got his first head coaching job, Doncic was among the first persons who congratulated him.
Stephen Silas – Houston Rockets
Rockets were never afraid to experiment. Years with Mike D’Antoni are proof. Always packed with more than one superstar, they were playing differently than most of the teams. Houston was shooting more threes than anybody else, and they had more isolations (mainly for James Harden) than any team in NBA history. But, they never managed to go all the way, which was the reason for the coaching change.
Stephen Silas was a perfect candidate for a coach of Rockets from the first moment because he was long enough in the League, and he was one of the creators of the Dallas Mavericks‘ extra efficient offense. The roster was clearly under reconstruction, and Silas was brave enough to accept the challenge and start rebuilding.

The coach of Houston Rockets was projected to coach James Harden and Russell Westbrook. The Rockets traded both Westbrook and Harden before the season and Harden after eight games. General manager Rafael Stone traded several players throughout the season, so the first season was not easy for the rookie coach.
Season 2021-2022
Entering his second season as the team head coach, Stephen Silas will need to look back into his many years of coaching experience and show his knowledge and tactical skills now more than ever. Houston now has nine players with less than four years of NBA experience, including five young rookies.

He has a reputation for building relationships with players of all ages and backgrounds, which was on full display during his first season.
This Rockets team will probably lose more than they will win, but you can expect them to be an inspiring team to watch and compete hard on both ends of the floor against every opponent.
