People often wonder what happens to the players who are undrafted. Is it the end of their career? Or, maybe, there is a different path for basketball enthusiasts who don’t make it into the NBA. It turns out that not making the draft isn’t the end! Players often travel abroad where they can achieve great success and show off their skills. They can still make their NBA dream come true if they are spotted by a recruiter and transferred back to the USA.
Anthony Gill didn’t meet with any luck when he participated in the 2016 draft. But now, he is a vital part of the Washington Wizards and he is spoken of fondly by his new team. Let’s take a look at his career and follow the road he took to finally make it to the NBA.
Anthony Gill – Early Life
Anthony Gill senior and Sandy Summers had their son, Anthony Gill, on October 17th, 1992. Little baby Anthony was born with nerve damage and half of his face was temporarily paralyzed. Unfortunately, his health was to impact his life in a huge and negative way.
Anthony Gill – College Career
After attending Charlotte Christian School of North Carolina, Anthony Gill started his college career in South Carolina but soon transferred to the University of Virginia, upon his coach being fired. As a Virginia Cavalier, he showed a lot of skill, leading the team in rebounding. He was third-team All-ACC and received a place on the coaches’ All-ACC defensive team. He actually managed to get his college education as he majored in anthropology.
Anthony Gill – Beginning of the NBA Regular Season
As mentioned before, upon not being chosen in the 2016 NBA Draft, Anthony Gill traveled to Germany and was supposed to be a part of MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg. Unfortunately, he did not pass the medical evaluation and couldn’t play for them. Then, he went to Turkey and signed with Yeşilgiresun Belediye.
Anthony Gill – Khimki
2017 was a homecoming for Anthony when he signed a contract to play in the NBA Summer League for the Charlotte Hornets. Upon the winds of autumn, he traveled abroad once again.
This time, he went to Russia and played for Khimki. He scored 8.3 points and 4.5 on average per game. He also had the opportunity to practice his 3 point shooting and after the contract termination, he got back to the United States.
Anthony Gill – Washington Wizards
In 2020 Gill joined Southeast Division Washington Wizards. The time with the Wizards could be cut short, because of Anthony’s barely visible impact on the court. He sat out most of the games of his first season. Despite his rare appearances, he is valued by his team for the hard work he puts in every day. It was rumored that his multi-year contract was to be terminated, but luckily Anthony made his appearance in the 2021-22 season.
Anthony Gill – Private Life
Through the ups and downs of his career, Gill Anthony was supported by his high school sweetheart, Jenna Jamil. They got married in 2016 and had a beautiful wedding. The ceremony was attended by Anthony’s UVa teammates. Malcolm Brogdon, Devon Hall, London Perrantes, and Darius Thompson were even groomsmen. Anthony and Jenna have three kids together and they seem like a happy and loving family.
Anthony Gill – Stats
Anthony’s rookie season was in 2020 and it’s good to look through these stats. He played only 26 games in the 2020-21 season, averaging 8.4 minutes per game. He has been drafted because of his three-pointers but still, he averages 0.3 three-pointers per game with a .292 three-point field goal percentage. He averaged 3.1 pts per game. He is yet to win an award. The possibility for his big break still exists if we take into account how much hard work he puts in. Let’s hope that the future will be more successful for Anthony and he will make himself more visible, maybe even make the news due to his incredible performances.
